Contractor website design and local SEO for trades in any US city

Who this is for

Built for owner-led trade companies

Stewart Code does contractor website design, local SEO and lead follow-up for contractors, home-service companies and light-industrial shops anywhere in the US, typically businesses doing between one and twenty million dollars a year. Roofers, remodelers, HVAC, pool, flooring, cabinet and CNC shops get most of their work from a handful of places online, and this page shows each one and what tends to break it.

You run crews, not marketing departments. So everything here is written to be checked in minutes, by you, on your own phone. Weighing a do-it-yourself builder first? Read Wix vs a custom site for contractors.

Where leads come from

The five doors a trade lead walks through

Most jobs pass through more than one of these before the phone rings. A weak door anywhere loses the job to the company down the road.

DoorWhat usually breaks itWhat fixes it
Google Business Profile and the map packWrong categories, an old phone number, no photos since the profile was made, a keyword-stuffed nameCorrect categories, a real service area, fresh job photos and posts, a name that matches your sign
ReviewsToo few recent reviews, and unanswered onesAsking every finished customer with one tap, and replying to every review, good or bad
Your website, checked on a phoneSlow loading on mobile data, no page for the specific job, a phone number you can't tapA fast site with a page per money service and tap-to-call on every screen
The quote formToo many fields, no confirmation, emails going to an inbox nobody readsShort form, instant reply, and the lead sent straight to whoever quotes
Speed of your replyThe lead comes in while you're on a job and gets a call back tomorrowAn automatic text or email back within a minute (texts only to people who asked to be contacted), then a human follow-up

The numbers

Why reviews and your profile carry so much weight

Almost everyone reads them

97% of US consumers read reviews of local businesses, and 41% say they always do.

The bar is rising

31% will only use a business rated 4.5 stars or higher, up from 17% the year before.

Replies matter

89% expect owners to respond to reviews, and 80% are likely to use a business that responds to all of them.

Most trade companies work at the customer's address, which makes them service-area businesses in Google's eyes. Google's rules say those businesses should hide their street address and set a service area instead (Google Business Profile guidelines, checked 2026-10-27). We check this setting first on every profile we touch.

Check it yourself

The 15-minute lead check, on your own phone

Do this from your truck, off Wi-Fi, as if you were a customer.

  1. Search your main service plus your town. Is your business in the map results? Note who is above you.
  2. Tap your profile. Is the phone number right? Are the most recent photos from this year?
  3. Read your last five reviews. How many have a reply from you?
  4. Tap through to your website. Count the seconds until you can read the first sentence.
  5. Find the page for your best-paying job. Is there one, or just a list?
  6. Tap the phone number on the site. Does it dial?
  7. Fill in your own quote form with a friend's number. Time how long until someone gets back to them.

If two or more of these went badly, that is where your next jobs are leaking. The free X-ray measures the website part for you.

Questions

Questions from contractors

What's more important for a contractor, the website or the Google Business Profile?

They work as a pair. The profile usually gets the first look in the map results, and the website is where people go to decide. A strong profile that links to a slow, vague site still loses jobs.

How do I get more Google reviews without breaking the rules?

Ask every finished customer, every time, with a direct link that opens the review box. Don't offer anything in return and don't filter who you ask. We set up a one-tap request flow on Growth Sites.

Do you work with lead-generation services like Angi or Thumbtack?

We don't sell leads. Many owners use those services alongside their own site; ours is built to bring in leads you don't share with competitors, and to track which source each one came from.

Can you work with my existing website?

Yes. Sometimes a Speed Sprint or profile clean-up is all it needs. The X-ray and a short call tell us whether rebuilding is worth it.

Do you meet in person?

No. Every call is by phone or video, so it fits around your jobs, and all of our work is done remotely.
