Small business websites, planned page by page

The short answer

What a small business website needs to do

A small business website needs to do three jobs: tell a stranger what you do and where, prove you are real and good at it, and make it easy to call or ask for a quote. Stewart Code builds that as a five-page Launch Site or a fifteen-page Growth Site for small businesses anywhere in the US, at a fixed price, with every page measured before you pay the balance.

Below is the page plan we start from, the list of things we will ask you for, and the common mistakes that cost small business sites leads. You can use all of it whether or not you hire us.

Page plan

The five pages, and the one job each has

A Launch Site has up to five pages. This is how we usually spend them for a local service business.

PageIts one jobWhat must be on it
HomeSay what you do, for whom, and where, in one screenYour main service and towns in the first sentence, phone number, one clear "get a quote" button
ServicesLet people find their exact jobEach service named the way customers say it, with a short description and a link to ask about it
Your best serviceWin the work you want more ofWhat it costs to think about, how the job runs, photos of real jobs, questions customers ask
AboutProve there is a real owner behind the businessYour name, your face, licenses you actually hold, how long you have served the area if you choose to say it
ContactTurn interest into a leadA short form, tap-to-call, service area, hours, and what happens after someone hits send

When you need more than this, for example a page for each town or each service line, that is what the Growth Site is for.

What you get

Included in a small business build

Words and design

Written for you, not filled in by you

We interview you, write the copy, and send it back for you to check facts. The design is custom, not a theme with your logo swapped in. If you don't have a usable logo yet, the Brand Starter Kit covers it.

Found and read

Search basics done properly

Technical SEO, structured data, sitemaps, image descriptions and an AI-readable facts file on every build, so search engines and assistants get your name, services and area right.

Plumbing

Domain, email and forms that work

Domain, DNS and business email set up with the records that stop your quotes landing in spam, plus analytics and a tested contact form.

After launch

Yours to keep

The site, domain and accounts are in your name. A care plan is optional, and you can host it yourself.

Your homework

What to have ready before kickoff

The faster these arrive, the faster you launch. Nothing here needs to be polished.

  • Your logo file, or a photo of your truck or sign if you don't have one (a brand starter kit is available if you need one made)
  • A list of every service you sell, and a star next to the ones you want more of
  • The towns and ZIP codes you serve, and the ones you won't drive to
  • 10 to 30 photos of real jobs, your team or your shop, straight off your phone is fine
  • License and insurance details you want shown
  • Login or registrar name for your domain, if you already own one
  • The five questions customers ask on every first call

The last item matters most. Those five questions become your page headings and your FAQ, which is how people, Google and AI assistants find the answer on your site instead of someone else's.

Common mistakes

Four things that quietly cost small businesses leads

No town names on the page

If the names of the towns you serve never appear, the site has a harder time showing up when someone searches those towns.

A form nobody checks

Forms that send to an old email address are common. We test delivery on the live site before launch.

The phone number is an image

People can't tap it and search engines can't read it. Ours are always real, tappable text.

A slow site on mobile

Google's own thresholds call a page "good" when its main content shows within 2.5 seconds for most visits (web.dev, Web Vitals, updated 2024-10-31). Many builder templates miss that on a phone.

Questions

Small business website questions

Is a five-page website enough for a small business?

For a business with one main service in one area, usually yes. Five well-written pages beat twenty thin ones. If you sell several services in several towns, a Growth Site gives each of them its own page.

Why not use Wix or Squarespace myself?

You can, and for some businesses it is the right call. The trade-off is your time, and the parts builders tend to skip: structured data, speed on a phone, and copy written around what customers search for. Our X-ray tool shows the speed difference side by side, using Google's own test, and Wix vs a custom site for contractors compares the two in detail.

Do I have to pay monthly after the site is built?

No. The site is yours. A care plan covers hosting, updates, backups and monitoring if you would rather not handle them, and Care can be canceled anytime.

Can I update the site myself later?

Yes. You own the code and the accounts. If you want a simple editing screen for your team, tell us at the start so we can scope it.

What do you need from me to start?

A kickoff call, the list on this page, and the deposit. We handle the rest and send you checkpoints to approve.
